Buildings of Birmingham

Buildings of Birmingham

Birmingham is best known for buildings of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but its history goes back much farther. Prehistoric peoples and Romans left their mark before Anglo-Saxons founded Birmingham around AD 600. A tiny village at the time of Domesday Book, its meteoric rise started with the creation of a new market town in the twelfth century. Five hundred years later, Birmingham had become the capital of the Midlands. A remarkable number of buildings and structures of all periods survive within the modern city.

This book describes and illustrates some of the most historically important architecture to be seen in Birmingham today and will serve as a useful guide for those wishing to explore and learn more about the city's history through its buildings.

Peter Leather is the Lecturer in Birmingham Studies at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of A Brief History of Birmingham and writes a local history column for the Birmingham News.
